What is Kambo?

Kambo is, in short, the secretions procured from the Phyllomedusa Bicolor, also known as the Giant Monkey Frog. This frog is found in abundance in the Amazon Basin.

Kambo was first introduced to the western world by a journalist and an anthropologist who had spent time with the Matses tribe in the 80s. In the 90s, they brought the medicine back to the US and had it analyzed by 2 scientists. What they found was a truly remarkable substance.

Contained in the secretions were a number of bioactive peptides, peptides being small chains of amino acids, which are also a part of the human body. The peptides found in Kambo are what makes it effective at treating a large variety of human ailments, and one of the most detoxifying substances on the planet.

It is important to note that pharmaceutical companies have been trying for years to create a synthetic version of kambo, but have not been successful to date.

Kambo Application

Kambo is applied to small superficial burns made to the skin, revealing the lymphatic system; these burns are called gates. When the gates are open, (if done correctly, there should not be any bleeding,) a small amount of Kambo is applied to each gate; these are called points. The points are left on the gates for approxiately 20 minutes; however, depending on the client, they can be left on for upwards of 40 minutes.

Once the medicine is removed, there will be a rest period, which can last anywhere between 20 minutes up to 1.5 hours, after which a substance called Dragon's Blood is applied to each gate. Dragon's blood is a natural antiseptic used to prevent infection and to seal the gates (pictured above). The scab formed will fall off when the gate is healed, usually 1-2 weeks. It is important not to pick off the scab, as this will increase the likelihood of scarring.

What to expect during a session

Kambo is known as the "ordeal medicine". It is not a psychedelic, so there are no visual nor auditory hallucinations, but it can be a very intense physical, and sometimes emotional, experience. The following describes a typical Kambo experience.

You will be expected to fast for 8-12 hours prior to the session. You will be asked to drink a pre-set amount of water immediately prior to the medicine being applied. Once the medicine is applied to the gates, it might sting a little bit. You will then start to feel a tingling sensation as the Kambo begins to spread from the gates throughout the lymphatic system. Following that, you will feel a flushing sensation, particularly in your head, and you may feel your heart pounding. Eventually you will start to feel a wave of nausea and/or the urge to go to the bathroom, (known as the purge,) which can come in 3 waves. You may also go through waves of being hot and then cold.

Throughout the process, there will be music playing softly, typically what's known as Medicine Music, or the practitioner may be beating a drum and singing. The practitioner will also be asking you to drink more water, typically after a significant purge. They might ask you to perform certain movements, such as leaning your head all the way back. The practitioner might also, at times, be burning sage or Palo Santo. If you are having a particularly difficult experience, you might be offered Hape (Amazonian tobacco snuff) or Sananga eye drops, depending on the difficulties experienced.

Once the medicine is removed you will likely need a rest period; during this rest period you may be shaky and sleepy, similar to your body's reaction following a prolonged exposure to cold. This usally lasts 20-30 minutes, but can last upwards of 1-1.5 hours, especially if you nap.

Following the rest period, it is very important to eat; watermelon, hummus, and soup are great post-kambo snacks.

FAQs

Is Kambo for eveyone?

No, unfortunately not. There are some conditions which are contraindicated in the application of Kambo. Your practitioner will evaluate each client for suitability. Your safety is of utmost priority.

Is Kambo safe?

For anyone who is not contraindicated, Kambo is perfectly safe, provided your practitioner is competent and qualified to serve the medicine, and provided you are fully transparent when filling out your medical forms. Having a medical condition, or taking any medications or supplements does not preclude you from being served Kambo, though there are some that do.

I have heard of people experiencing frog face, what is it?

Frog face is a normal reaction with Kambo, though it doesn't happen to everyone, and to those who have experienced it, it does not happen every time. Having this reaction does not mean that you are allergic to Kambo.

When you experience frog face, you are experiencing the swelling of the face, lips, and throat. It can be alarming to some people, especially if it is their first time taking Kambo, as it mimics an allergic reaction, though it is not such a reaction, and your throat will not swell shut. It can, however, be uncomfortable and make it difficult to drink water during the Kambo session. The swelling begins to subside immediately following the removal of the Kambo points, and may take up to a day to fully subside, though it is usually gone by the end of the day.

Frog face is believed to occur due to one of the peptides which activates the histamine receptors in the body.

Is Kambo legal?

Yes, Kambo is legal almost everywhere in the world.

Why do you need to drink so much water?

The main reason for drinking water is to mitigate the risk of esophogeal rupture which is a risk when dry-heaving. A responsible practitioner, however, will monitor and limit water consumption so as not to risk hyponatremia, a life-threatening condition caused by the consumption of too much water and not enough electrolytes. A competent practitioner will have strict water guidelines, not allowing you to consume more than 4 litres (1 gallon) of water in a single Kambo session.

We limit water intake to a total of 2.5 litres, 1.5L before and 1L during each session, so that if you do end up needing more, there is some wiggle room.

Do I have to purge?

The short answer: no, you don't. There are some people who do not purge, and this is ok. That being said, it is encouraged as it can be a huge release, physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.
